Introducing a whole new vision in crib mattresses: the Sopora Perfect

When you say the words, “crib mattress,” people can easily bring an image to mind. It is probably a crunchy vinyl mattress with rolled/taped edges and some non-distinct floral pattern. It isn’t surprising; we’ve all grown up sleeping on mattresses just like that. But just because something ‘has always been that way,” doesn’t mean it is the right way. Remember when seat belts came out?

Well, the women at Sopora are boldly breaking away from traditional crib mattresses and are combining the best of natural materials, scientific research and testing, and heavy doses of mother’s intuition to create something so ground breaking that it completely redefines the crib mattress market. That product is the Sopora Perfect.

Dads Rule

In honor of Father’s Day, let us give a shout-out to all of the dads out there. As all of us moms can attest, there is nothing sweeter (or sexier) than the father of our child playing with and cuddling with our kids. Those moments when they are pacing the floor, crooning to soothe an upset child, lifting our babies high into the air (making us nervous and happy all at once) and those glimpses of them playing catch or working on a project together just make us melt.

We love our children fiercely and we will protect them from all of life’s harms the best we can, but when we see dads stepping in and seamlessly accomplishing our shared goals (even if not quite in the way we said it should be done) it reminds us of the reasons we choose you in the first place!

Dads are so important in the lives of our children, and they are often maligned (Homer Simpson anyone?). But we know better. We know, for instance, that:

• Fathers’ interaction with babies (engaging in cognitively stimulating activities, emotional warmth, physical care) reduced their infants’ chances of experiencing cognitive delay.

• Babies as young as three months old can tell the difference between their mother and father. They can tell by the way each speaks to them, holds them, and by their different smells.

• Children whose fathers are involved in rearing them (“sensitive and responsive fathering”) fare better on cognitive tests and in language ability than those with less responsive or involved fathers.

• Improved cognitive abilities are associated with higher educational achievement. In fact, fathers who are involved in their children’s schools and academic achievement, regardless of their own educational level, are increasing the chances their child will graduate from high school, and perhaps go to vocational school, or even to college.

• A fathers’ involvement in children’s school activities protects at-risk children from failing or dropping out.

• Positive father involvement decreased boys’ problem behaviors (especially boys with more challenging temperaments) and better mental health for girls.

• Fathers who are more involved with their children tend to raise children who experience more success in their career.

• Fathers being involved in their children’s lives protects against risk factors that pose harm for children (such as problematic behavior, maternal depression and family economic hardship).

• Father involvement is associated with promoting children’s social and language skills.

• Involved fathering is related to lower rates of child problem behaviors, including hyperactivity, as well as reduced teen violence, delinquency, and other problems with the law.

• Father involvement is associated with positive child characteristics such as increased: empathy, self-esteem, self-control, feelings of ability to achieve, psychological well-being, social competence, life skills, and less sex-stereotyped beliefs.

• Children who grow up in homes with involved fathers are more likely to take an active and positive role in raising their own families. For example, fathers who recall a secure, loving relationship with both parents are more involved in the lives of their infants and more supportive to their wives.

• Both men and women who remember having loving, supportive fathers had high life satisfaction and self-esteem.

(Thanks research department at the University of Florida! )

Dads, you do so much and we love you. So whether you are near or far, biological or emotional, thank you. From all of us at Sopora, Echelon and Muniré, we say most sincerely: Happy Father’s Day.

The Importance of Being a Mom

Sopora is mother created and mother operated. That might sound like a small thing, but to us, it goes to the very heart of why we are in business: we make mattresses for children—our children and yours. Our kids sleep on these products, too. For that reason alone, they have to be great. After all, our little loved ones are the test market for your little loved ones.
This Mother’s Day we are especially honored to have joined forces with Munire Furniture and Echelon—two companies likewise devoted to creating safe, beautiful, quality furniture to make our children’s lives more beautiful, more comfortable, and more durable. This is a happy union and we have been very blessed to be among friends.
One result of our merger to date, has been a fantastic contest where we gave away an American Dream Nursery, $3,500 value. You heard about it, you may even have voted, but we wanted to stop and take a minute to relive some of the wise words our contestants entered about what it means to be a great mom in honor of the big holiday!
So, without further ado, in honor of Mother’s Day, please read on to be inspired by some of our contest entrants, and some folks who weren’t, to remember the importance of being a great parent, a great mom—like we all strive to be each and every day.

• “Great parents preside over their families in love and righteousness, nurture their children, and responsibly provide the necessities of life and protection for their families.” — Josefina Miller, contestant

• “I never knew how fulfilling life could be until I had my first child! I think two of the most important things you can give your child [are]; unconditional love and living what you teach! … I have come to realize that as a parent, I am learning far more than I am teaching—and maybe that’s what makes a great parent.” –Amy Pugmire, contestant

• “Not [being] afraid to admit mistakes, great parents will say ‘I was wrong,’ ‘I’m sorry,’ and ‘Please forgive me.’ This shows the child vulnerability, teaches forgiveness, and plants the seeds of empathy.’– Katie Christianson, contestant

• “A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.”– Tenneva Jordan

• “Most mothers are instinctive philosophers.” –Harriet Beecher Stowe

• “The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness.” Honore de Balzac

And finally, remember that “behind every successful woman……is a basket of dirty laundry”—author unknown (or hiding!) Revel in your motherhood this holiday and wear that macaroni necklace proudly, after all, nothing is sweeter than a gift truly given from their happy little hearts (or their sticky little hands!) Happy Mother’s Day everyone from all of us at Sopora, Echelon, Munire Furniture and Nursery Chatter!

Celebrate Earth Day Like a Child!

Kids are naturally drawn to natural science and the environment.  In honor of Earth Day, consider celebrating the planet with your little one.  Here are some great kid-oriented projects to put you in the mood from the About.com Earth Day guide

  • Create a papier-mâché globe.  What kid doesn’t like getting a little dirty and have something lasting to show for it.  Consider highlighting your home or places you’ve been, or where your child’s favorite animals come from.
  • Make recycled animal sculptures from egg cartons or craft sticks—or use clay or sculpty-dough!
  • Visit your local zoo, aquarium or botanical gardens or even your yard.  Be sure to look low for the bugs kids love and up high for the birds and clouds in the air.  Even a walk around your neighborhood can be an educational outing exploring nature: talk about recycling, lawn care, even types of plants or trees.
  • Color a picture or read a book about the environment (Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax, for example!)
  • Or consider planting a tree, seed or flower.  Even the smallest child can plant a petunia!  Just be sure not to let them put the flowers in their mouths.

Children love nature.  They are forever curious about animals, rain, stars, and everything that blooms and doesn’t.  This Earth Day, or all year ‘round, take a moment to help your children understand their importance to the world and how what they do, and what all of us can do, affects the world in very real ways.

And be a good example for them.  As we can all attest, when a child starts to speak, their first words are mimics of our own.  So be a good steward for Planet Earth.  From recycling to shopping smart, your actions can help set the stage for an environmentally-conscious child.

Sopora Sleep Products, Inc., a division of Muniré Furniture, shares your concern about the health of our planet.  Our mattresses are made primarily with plant-based eco-friendly foam.  The production process of this material actually has a positive carbon footprint—meaning it is good for the environment instead of being a detriment.  This eco-friendly foam is 100% renewable and meets medical standards for support and hypoallergenic properties.  Further, Sopora products are free of harmful chemicals and off-gassing that can pose a hazard to your children.  One more benefit?  Sopora mattresses are made in America meeting environmental production standards and requiring less shipping, and therefore creating less of an environmental burden on Mother Earth.

Celebrate Earth Day in style this year.  You can be sure that all of us at Sopora will be digging in the dirt with our kids or will be sharing the fun as we’re up to our elbows in gunk right along with you.  After all, we’re moms, too!

Avoiding Allergens in Your Child's Crib

As experts are predicting the worst allergy season in a decade (http://www.emaxhealth.com), knowing what you can do to help stop allergies in your crib before they start is paramount.

First, choose the right mattress. Crib mattresses can be filled with all kinds of hazards you don’t want anywhere near your child. Toxins like antimony (a common fire retardant chemical), lead, and phthalates; even commonly used materials like PVC and vinyl, emit toxins in the form of off-gassing that can be hazardous to your child’s health. The best advice? Skip those ingredients all together and buy a mattress made without excess chemicals and known hazards.

Does that mean you should go organic? Some say yes, but we disagree. Proponents of all-organic mattresses claim their superiority because they breathe. But their design doesn’t only let the air flow, it also welcomes urine flow, bed bugs, dust mites, bacteria, dog hair, and any other innumerable unmentionables to flow as well. That is why we’d recommend that you select a mattress made with eco-friendly products that also meets medical guidelines. The right mattress will have no off-gassing AND no dust mites, allergens, bacteria or other creepy crawlies.

For further peace of mind, look for independent third party testing of manufacturer claims and industry standards like CertiPUR® foams certified for durability, content and off-gassing emissions, and GreenGuard® certification for indoor air quality.

Second, keep your mattress clean. Select a mattress that allows you to quickly and easily wipe the surface clean each time you change the sheets. Sopora mattresses, for example, are designed with smooth, even surface and flat edges to take a simple damp sponge and less than 30 seconds to wipe clean. No chemicals or cleansers needed. Each time you change the sheet, wash your pad (if you use one) and quickly sponge the mattress. Your crib will not retain any odors and your sleep surface will remain as clean as the day you put it in the crib.

Third, remove the obvious offenders. Bumper pads, a cute teddy bear, that adorable blanket knit by your favorite aunt, and the fuzzy little rattle, also attract dust and soak up moisture. Where there is dust, and a meal, there are dust mites. And where there is something warm and wet, there is also bacteria. So, as much as you may think an empty crib just doesn’t look right, trust yourself. You know better. Remove the cute, unnecessary items and you’ll have a cleaner, safer sleep environment. Put Teddy on the shelf and the blanket or quilt on your rocker, your child can still enjoy them during play time and you won’t have to worry about hours of exposure each night, and afternoon, and early morning, and…

Finally, think globally. No, we don’t mean you should blame deforestation, rather—consider your child’s sleep environment beyond simply the crib mattress surface—consider the entire crib area or nursery.
• Take care of that beautiful crib. Keep it well dusted and free of surface spills or dirt.
• Vacuum under and around the crib and nursery weekly at a minimum.
• If pet hair is a consideration, be sure to remove it regularly to avoid potential problems.
• And don’t forget that adorable curtain or window treatment. We all long for sunlight in the nursery, but don’t forget to regularly clean the sills and curtains.

No one is perfect, and no nursery can be 100% clean and fresh 24/7. But by making simple, smart decisions during the selection process, then doing regular small steps to maintain those products, you’ll be ahead of the curve and your child will be healthier in the long run.
