Father’s Day Facts from Sopora

There are all kinds of Dads out there: the golfer, the fisherman, the handyman, the techie, the sports enthusiast, or even the treckie.  One thing all Dads have in common?  They want the best for their children.  They want their kids to be healthy, happy, and safe.  And who can argue with that?

In honor of Father’s Day, we’re going to make one decision really simple for Dad…when it comes to mattresses for your children, buy a Sopora.

  • Sopora mattresses have fabric covers to support from the insides out.  Your baby won’t have spinal, head and joint pressure from a too tight plastic or vinyl wrap.  Rather they are supported by the eco-friendly high density foam on the inside that was designed for their little bodies.
  • Sopora mattresses have been stringently tested by independent third party labs, like UL (Underwriters Laboratory) and Intertek, to ensure that they are free from indoor air pollution, off gassing or harmful toxins.  (Certi-PUR-US certified, UL’s Greenguard Children and Schools/Greenguard Gold certified, Prop 65 compliant, FR 1633 and 1632 compliant).
  • Sopora mattresses are made in the USA, have a lifetime warranty, come in eight models to fit any budget, and are designed by a team of Moms—after all, who always has Dad’s back?

Give the Expecting Mom Peace of Mind This Mother’s Day

Ask any mom-to-be what she wants for Mother’s day and she’ll likely say something sweet like a foot rub, a charm bracelet, or art for the nursery.  What she is thinking is probably that she wishes you could be pregnant for nine longs months and then go through labor instead of her!  Be that as it may be, this holiday, we’re suggesting you give the mother-to-be in your life a little peace of mind.

Give her a mattress that is clinically proven to provide her child with:

  • Longer periods of uninterrupted sleep
  • Better quality sleep
  • Better temperature control for less mid-sleep wake-ups
  • Increased air flow and oxygenation in the sleep environment

Basically, give her a Sopora PERFECT crib mattress.  Sound self-serving?  No way.  New moms walk around in a sleep-deprived funk after baby arrives.  Believe the moms at Sopora, all mothers themselves, that giving her a couple of extra hours of sleep WILL make all the difference.

The Perfect has so many features to make it worthy of giving to the most important woman in your life.

  • Celliant fabric cover—exclusive only to Sopora
  • CoolGel temperature regulating visco (memory) foam on the toddler side for better support and comfort as baby gets older
  • Babysbreath Airflow technology that pushes air around the mattress and up to the surface to provide increased airflow at the surface
  • The Original ‘seamless’ mattress with-ultrasonically sealed, flat, dropped seams to banish bed bugs, dust mites, leaks, bacteria, and microbes
  • Lightweight design for easy middle of night changes
  • Squared corners and edges for best possible fit in a crib
  • A hypoallergenic, non-off gassing, safe sleep surface
  • All the certifications you could ever want and need
  • And a whole host of other features and benefits designed especially for moms, by Terri Paul, Sopora’s momprenuer

And while we could go on and on about mattresses for pages and pages, to really give peace of mind, you need assurance that you aren’t just being ‘sold’ a  bill of goods from the manufacturer—no matter how much you love the Sopora mommies.  So here it is: our peace of mind offering….

  • The Sopora Perfect crib mattress was recommended as “THE BEST” crib mattress available in the 2013 edition of Baby Bargains—a well-respected, well known consumer’s guide to what you really need and should buy for your baby. Breathe Easy This Earth Day!

I know Earth Day is a day to celebrate, protect, and preserve our planet—but I feel we can take it a step further and use Earth Day as a catalyst to protect and preserve our home environments as well.

Indoor air pollution can be a serious health hazard, especially in today’s more air-tight modern homes. Paint, carpet, furniture, manufactured woods, all are sources of toxins, off gassing and chemicals.  Even the foods we eat and the dishes from which we eat them can be a problem.

But instead of trying to change the whole world at once, we always advise people to take one step at a time. Focus on where you spend the greatest amount of time and have the most sustained contact.  Like a mattress.

Newborns will spend 15-18 hours a day on their crib, cradle or bassinet mattress—more time than even in the arms of their loving parents. Teens may spend up to 12 hours sleeping.  These are periods of heavy physical development and mental processing  and good sleep is essential to good health.  For everyone not of these ages, even 8 hours a day in one place is likely the most exposure to any one item in your home.  It only makes sense then to choose a mattress that will keep your family safe.

Look for mattresses that:

  • do not add to indoor air pollutants
  • do not off-gas toxins into your home
  • are made of healthcare grade and natural materials
  • are free from ‘organic contaminant’ like bed bugs, dust mites, and allergenic triggers—like dust

You want a mattress that is easy to clean in case of accidents (the bigger the child, the bigger the potential mess), that supports their joints and frame ergonomically with proper spinal support and contouring, and has clean, sealed seams to disallow hiding spots for crawling things and disallow crevices for collecting dust and dead skin cells.

Ideally, you also want a mattress that is comfortable—look for one with dual sleep surfaces for older children to pick their comfort level and for infants to have firm support as newborns and increased comfort as they grow to toddlers.

Need help deciphering marketing lingo from various manufacturers? Look for the following:

  • Buy a mattress from a company that submits to independent, third party testing and certification.  One good source is UL’s Greenguard certification.  Greenguard certification is a set of stringent standards that are applied to all areas and all materials in the mattress.  Their Greenguard Children and Schools certification (soon to be called GOLD certification) is the highest level attainable for youth mattresses.  If you’re buying a foam mattress, look for foams certified by Certi-PUR US.  These foams are free from off-gassing and indoor air pollutants.
  • Made in the USA.  It isn’t just a gimmick.  The United States has standards for manufacturing and materials products that are closely monitored by groups like the Consumer Products Safety Commission.
  • Watch State regulations, too.  Often States, like California, will lead the nation in securing a safety feature before the Federal government takes action.  Look for, for example, fire protection rating 1633 and 1632 to keep your children as safe as possible. And ideally, look for a product that achieves these high standards without additional chemical application—after all, the point of clean air in homes is reducing chemicals.

Finally, remember that you are the parent.  You need to play a roll in making decisions.  So give it the common sense test: touch it, feel it, smell it.  You want a smooth surface that is soft to the touch but well supported by the inside of the mattress.  Plastic and vinyl, sure they protect the guts of the mattress, but do you want your face pressed against that?  If you don’t want to put your face on it, don’t make your children rest theirs all night either.

And like most good advice, avoid extremes.  All organic?  That sounds good, but if leaks can soak in, how do you clean out the smell and the bacterial growth? How do you keep out bed bugs, or the dust mites (a leading cause of allergies?)

Creating a safe sleep environment, safe home environment is all about common sense, a little research, and letting the experts do their jobs.  Read the labels, go to stores with real knowledgeable sales people, and ask around, you’ll find what you’re looking for.  And when you are confident about the mattresses your family is sleeping on, everyone will get a better night’s rest—and you’ll have all the more energy to go enjoy Earth Day outside with your kids!

Report cards are out: what grade did your child earn in sleep?

SleepingchildA good night’s sleep is imperative for proper brain functioning, health, physical efficiency, and even happiness.  But few of us ever consider what our older child is sleeping on.  We obsess over infants and their cribs (for good reason).  We make an expedition over finding the right mattress for ourselves, but what about our tweens and teens?  Come clean: are they sleeping on the old ‘guest’ mattress?

The stress on growing bodies doesn’t decrease as children mature.  In fact, outside of infancy, children do more growing during their early teen years than at any other time in their lives.  Shouldn’t we put some thought into the one item they spend more time on than any other?  No, we’re not talking about  their Xbox…their mattress?

Think about it.  They are up and moving from desk to desk during the day, or sport to sport on the weekend.  They are on and off the couch or dinner table at night.  It is only their mattress that gets them for, hopefully, many hours in a row each night.

So what is your child sleeping on?  There may be good reason to worry.  Fully half of teens say they rarely or never get a good night’s sleep. In fact 67% report waking unrefreshed at least a few nights a week (study at: http://www.ispaindustryconference.com/2013/01/generation-y/).

Some psychologists attribute poor sleep to the unique anxiety level of Generation Y.  Others to their inability to ‘disconnect’ from their wired world.  Perhaps both are right.  But the much less exciting explanation could be that they aren’t getting the spinal support, temperature control, and tension releasing experience that a premium youth mattress can offer.

So talk to your child.  Then go look under their sheets.  Maybe it is time you consider upgrading their mattress to one made just for them and their uniquely growing body—like a Sopora mattress.

Sleep Accessories to Change Your Perception of Baby Gear

Moms choice image

We talk a lot about crib mattresses; after all, we’re a crib mattress company. But we do so much more. In fact, our sleep accessories have been getting quite a bit of attention lately—even a Mom’s Choice Award! Let me tell you about some of them.

Sopora O2 Collection Mattress liners:
For generations people have been using liners as a layer between their baby’s mattress and the crib sheet. Liners soak up wetness, are easy to change when messy, and are quick to wash. At Sopora, we’ve taken the traditional liner and combined it with Celliant®. As you may recall from our first article about Celliant®, Celliant® is a blend of 13 natural minerals that improves your circulation by absorbing the excess infared LIGHT the body releases, the result is increased oxygen levels in your body. The result is increased oxygen in your blood and surface tissue. For the littlest in your family, our cradle/bassinet liners serve to provide better periods of longer sleep. For your older children in twins and fulls, our liners do this AND improve physical performance: your little athletes will feel less fatigue, experience increased endurance, have faster muscle recovery, and experience less soreness. Celliant® has been clinically proven to offer these benefits, and you can only find Celliant® in the junvenile market from Sopora. Outgrowing that bassinet? Take your Celliant® liner with you, they can be used anywhere–in the bed, in the car seat, at Grandma’s or wherever you might be traveling, changing diapers or putting baby down for a nap. (Oh yeah, and you can just toss them in the washer/dryer time and time again and they are good as new!).

Sopora O2 Collection Swaddle blankets:
Again, used for generations to keep newborns feeling cozy and protected as they adjust to life outside the womb, swaddle blankets can be used anywhere at any time. Sopora’s swaddle blankets are a combination of incredibly soft natural bamboo and Celliant® to provide a luxurious, washable cozy swaddle for your baby with the side benefit of helping to regulate body temperature, increase and improve sleep duration and quality, and ease any soreness. When baby outgrows their swaddle, our plush fabric will keep delighting them as their favorite carry-along blankie for years to come!

Sopora Nursery Essentials Naturals Collection Organic Cotton Mattress Cover:
Some moms want a cover for their mattress to help keep it clean. And while you certainly don’t need one with a Sopora mattress, if you feel more comfortable using one, we’ve got the ideal solution. Our mattress cover is made of 100% natural, domestically grown organic cotton. It is pure, soft, and beautiful—really, it is even fully fashioned to cover all the edges like a sheet so that you can use it as a top layer if you’d like. But the really cool thing, is that is it waterproof, too. So give your baby the benefits or organic cotton, protect your mattress with a waterproof backing and toss the whole thing in the wash whenever you want to. Moms loved this product so much—we just won the Mom’s Choice Award for it. Even better? You can layer it over a Celliant® liner and give your child the best combination that science and nature have to offer!

At Sopora, we’re moms ourselves. So we’re always looking to find new ways of improving products to fit the ever changing needs in our busy lives and the lives of our children. That is the inspiration for everything we do. If you have a suggestion for us on how we can improve your child’s sleep—let us hear it!

Happy Holidays from Sopora

holiday reaching baby

The holidays are a special time, especially when you’re expecting.  As mother’s ourselves, may we offer a bit of advice on the season?  Breathe deep.  Enjoy yourself. Relax.  There is no perfect mom, there is no perfect pregnancy.  There are simply people, who love deeply, who make mistakes, and who want nothing but the best for their families.

So, today as you look at your list of a million to-dos, smile.  Be thankful for the family that you have things to-do for, and remember that if half of that list doesn’t get done, the holidays will not be ruined.  After all, it isn’t about how sparkling clean the kitchen floor is or if you have a fifth variety of holiday cookie—it is about spending time with your loved ones.

And if you’re pregnant and anticipating how your next holiday will be so dramatically different from this one, relish your dreams and hopes.  Take that moment to sit in the nursery and dream.  And maintain that feeling of peace as you go about your day.  Your baby is experiencing this holiday, too.  Make it a good one.

From all of us at Sopora, we wish you a brilliant holiday season filled with life’s simple pleasures, happiness, health and joy.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving

Since 1863 when President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving as a national day of giving thanks for our blessings, the holiday has been a time of gathering family and loved ones and celebrating the simple fact that you are together, that you are alive, and that you have much to be thankful for.

In our busy lives we so often get bogged down in our to-do lists, in the things we so desperately want, or in the problems and gripes of any given day.  But at Thanksgiving, we are provided the opportunity to look past all of that and cherish what we have: those who are sitting around the table with us, sharing in our joy and love.

Meals vary from the gourmet to the traditional, from the overcooked to the under done, but one thing is the same—the thought and love put into every one of them.  It isn’t about the perfect golden turkey; it is about who is eating it.  For those of you reading this blog, more likely that day is even more special.

As new or expectant parents, no one can deny that the day a child comes into our lives, those lives are forever changed.  A couple becomes a family.  A woman or man becomes a mommy or a daddy.  And that lovingly set, tranquil Thanksgiving dinner becomes a fight for sanity as high chairs belly up to the table and the best crystal and china is replaced with BPA free plastic and burp cloths.

Whether you are a parent by birth, adoption, marriage, surrogate or any other possible way under the sun, rejoice this holiday with your family and be thankful for them and what they mean to you.  And if you can take one quiet moment to look past the dry stuffing and shoes piled up at the door, to reflect upon how wonderfully your lives have changed—count that in itself as a blessing.  Because in this harried, hurried, hectic life, we need to embrace happiness at every opportunity.

To all of you, from all of us at Echelon, Munire Furniture and Sopora, we wish you a truly Happy Healthy Thanksgiving!

Wow! What a month it has been at Sopora!

Here is a little insight into the baby biz that you might find interesting…each fall there is a giant industry tradeshow for baby stuff. It is filled with thousands of buyers looking to find the latest and greatest products to stock their baby specialty stores in hopes that you will find something you love next time you go shopping. Exhibitors—the makers of all the stuff you buy for your baby—likewise come to the show in hopes that it will be their products (our products) that the store owners just can’t live without.

From exquisite American made, hand finished cribs and furniture for the nursery (courtesy of Echelon) to the latest car seats and strollers, from adorable little hand knit eco socks and cute toys to diaper bags fit for everyone from the girliest of your girlfriends to the most macho of daddies, it is all there in one place. It is a little overwhelming and pretty amazing. And honestly, if you were pregnant and attending this show for the first time your eyes might actually pop out of your head with everything there is to see.

In fact, it takes days to walk the show floor and see everything that is available, but there are a few ways buyers get help.

First, the producers of the All Baby & Child Expo host a “New Product Showcase” of items. These items are selected by an expert panel of judges. The chosen products are protected at the show by guards who only let in the media and buyers and being selected to be in this showcase is an honor. At Sopora, we are proud to say that our Perfect crib mattress—the one we’ve told you about here–was a winner.

Next, a group called the Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association hosts a Most Innovative award and, again, the Sopora Perfect was one of the products selected and displayed.

Store owners came to our booth to see what all the excitement is about and we hope that this means that you will soon be able to buy the Sopora Perfect crib mattress in your favorite specialty store. Give them a call and come see for yourself what all the buzz is about!

All the buzz is exactly where I’m headed next…Creative Child magazine just awarded our mattresses with a Preferred Choice Award. Pregnancy & Newborn Magazine called Sopora mattresses one of their Favorite Things in their Fall 2012 Buyers Guide! And, to top it off, a Sopora Perfect and our Nursery Essentials were given away on the #1 game show on television: The Price is Right (they did a baby shower episode!).

It has been a big month for Sopora. How do we top it? Have I told you about all of our cool new products? Read next time as I unveil our Sopora O2 Collection of products—you’ll be amazed!

Have you heard of Celliant®? Here is what you really want to know.

First, a little science. When astronauts are on the international space station, they experience gravity, light, and atmospheric pressure in an entirely different way than when they are walking around Earth like the rest of us. That makes sense—after all, if you spend your day floating around, you are bound to experience life a little differently.

One of the jobs of scientists is keeping those space explorers healthy. That is why NASA invented a performance fiber that came to be known as Celliant®. Celliant® is a blend of 13 natural minerals that, based on ancient wellness processes, interact with the body to actually change the performance of our biology.

Celliant® uses your excess body heat (expressed as infrared light), and through specially designed clothing, recycles it into a form of light/energy that your body will reabsorb. This recycling process helps increase circulation by re-harnessing the body’s energy, which results in, improved (higher) oxygen levels from your skin to your arterial level.

Depending on whom you are and what you do, you care about this discovery for different reasons. Reebok™, Saucony™ and IronMan™ use this technology to improve performance in top athletes: they feel less fatigue, experience increased endurance, have faster muscle recovery, and experience less soreness. Healthcare centers use Celliant® to help diabetic patients improve circulation in their limbs or to increase the rate of tissue growth in burn units.

Sopora uses Celliant® in our sleep products because the fiber has been clinically proven to improve sleep quality. Increased circulation results in more oxygen in the blood which results in deeper, calmer rest. It also results in improved temperature control. So, when you add a performance fiber to your crib, you are offering your child (and yourself) better sleep every day and every night. And let’s face it, a happy, well rested child equals a happy, well rested mommy.

Sound amazing? It is. And what’s more, our Celliant® fabric crib mattresses are available to you right now from our Sopora retail partners. And arriving in stores soon, you’ll find Celliant® products for your child no matter what their age: from crib mattresses, to liners for bassinet/cradles, twins and fulls; from swaddle blankets to toddler pillows, our Sopora O2 Collection is filled with cool technology to help your child sleep longer, better. Visit one of our stores today to see our amazing crib mattresses for yourself, and get ready to meet the rest of the O2 Collection coming this winter!

Six Steps to Selecting the Best Crib Mattress

We get asked all the time about what our advice is for buying the best crib mattress, here are a few guidelines to help you put your baby to sleep in comfort each and every night. 6 Steps to Selecting the Best Crib Mattress…

After selecting the perfect bed, bedding, wall color and décor, taking the time to learn all about mattresses seams exhausting. But be careful—mattress selection is more important than you think. Newborns may sleep up to 18 hours a day on this purchase. Nothing will have closer, longer, more direct contact with your child than you! Take a deep breath, trust your instincts, ask a lot of questions and prepare to buy that new mattress.

For those of you that want some more advice? Here are our six tips to selecting a mattress that is safe, comfortable, and healthy.

1. Proper Fit. You don’t want more than the width of one finger between your crib mattress and the crib walls. Mattresses with squared corners and edges promote the tightest fit and hold your sheets tightly.

2. Promote safety. Premium mattresses have firm side rails, or edges, that help encourage babies to sleep in the center of the mattress where there is the best ventilation and least danger from crib walls. They are also designed with oxygen promoting or air circulation properties to further reduce any potential problems.

3. Consider Health. Babies spend a lot of time in their cribs. Look for mattresses that help keep this environment healthy. Select a mattress that is anti-allergen, anti-microbial, anti-dust mite, anti-bed bug and remains hygienically clean. Look for a mattress that seals out impurities and leaks. Also look at certifications and independent testing. Independent testing agencies, like GreenGuard Children and Schools testing for indoor air quality, Certi-PUR US testing for indoor emissions, and Intertek testing to rule out harmful chemicals like lead, PVC, and phthalates, among other things, all help to protect your child’s sleep environment.

4. Cleanliness. Consider how your mattress will stand up to those little accidents. Needle holes along edges where decorative cording, or taping, is sewn allows liquids to seep into your mattress becoming a haven for germs and bacteria. Heat sealed seams melt two pieces of material together making the seams one of the weakest parts of the mattress. The best mattresses have welded seams that are closed ultrasonically keeping germs, bacteria, and dust mites out and maintaining the strength of the seam.

5. Durability. Your mattress could be your child’s constant companion for three years or more. Select a product that will meet the challenge. Look for premium ticking (the fabric that covers the mattress), a lifetime warrantee, and good construction. Consider performance fabrics that improve a child’s physical well being and oxygenation, or that regulate body temperature. And let your senses be your guide—if it doesn’t feel nice under your hand, do you really want it under your sleeping child with nothing but a sheet in between.

6. Comfort. Make the crib comfortable. A good mattress offers dual levels of comfort for increased performance at all ages of their development. An extra firm side for infants and a firm side for toddlers. Premium mattresses even come with viscoelastic foam or CoolGel visco foam for spinal alignment, pressure point reduction, and temperature control . The ticking, too, should be soft and supple and conform to your child’s body, not resist it creating sore spots or flattened areas. A crib mattress should be firm, but it doesn’t have to feel like a piece of hard plastic. Test it out yourself—put the mattress on the showroom floor and lay on it. If you don’t like how it feels, neither will your child. Sound crazy? It isn’t—we do it all the time. Sometimes you just have to try something out.

High Standards? They are. But the safety and health of your baby depends on it.
